ISLAMORADA, Fla. — An SUV ended up crashing after sending a Florida Highway Patrol trooper on a high-speed chase Sunday morning in the Florida Keys.

According to the Miami Herald, the chase went on for at least 30 miles on U.S. Highway 1 before the SUV crashed into a construction zone – miles away from runners competing in a race.

The chase stopped after deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office reportedly deployed spikes on the highway to deflate the car's tires.

WPLG reports troopers started to chase the Chevrolet SUV when the driver "refused to stop after driving recklessly and on the wrong side of the road."

Witnesses of the incident say they saw the SUV speeding north on the highway, even into oncoming traffic to try to get away from the troopers, the Miami Herald explains.

The driver, whose identity hasn't been revealed, was taken into custody following the crash. They will be taken to jail after being released from the hospital.

“We got super lucky that person didn’t hit any of the runners competing today,” Islamorada Fire Rescue Chief Terry Abel told the newspaper.
