FHP, police disrupt planned street takeover in Tampa, multiple people arrested

Four drivers were charged with felonies and six passengers were charged with street racing and takeover. Four vehicles were also impounded with 30-day holds.

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol and the Tampa Police Department made multiple arrests after disrupting a planned street takeover late Friday night into early Saturday morning.

As a result of the operation, four drivers were charged with felonies, six passengers were charged with street racing and takeover, four vehicles were impounded with 30-day holds. Two guns were also recovered.

FHP and TPD responded to the following locations to shut the event down, according to troopers:

  • Busch Blvd. and Florida Ave.
  • Temple Terrace Winn Dixie (U.S. Hwy 301)
  • Fletcher Ave. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

Troopers said each location "involved large groups of individuals and vehicles mingling." Any street racing or dangerous driving was prevented from starting and Busch and Florida and Temple Terrace Winn Dixie.

However, troopers arrived at Fletcher and Bruce B. Downs to find people and vehicles participating in a street takeover and stunt driving.

Troopers were able to catch up to the vehicles and start making arrests.

FHP reminded Florida residents that if they encounter street racing or a roadway takeover, follow these steps:

  • Remain calm
  • Do not engage
  • If possible, safely pull over to the side of the road
  • Report it by calling *FHP or 911 and you will be immediately routed to the nearest dispatch center.
