Arrest made in fatal Largo crash that killed 2 people

Authorities say the man arrested was driving 92 mph when he ran a red light.

LARGO, Fla. — The driver involved in a fatal, two-car crash that left two people dead has been arrested, according to the Largo Police Department.

The agency, along with the Clearwater Police Department, arrested 33-year-old Ilia Andoni on Monday in connection to the deaths of 26-year-old Paulino Trejo-Mendoza and 22-year-old Ariadna Sanchez Monrroy on Sunday, Jan. 28.

According to Largo Police, the department's Traffic Homicide Unit responded to an incident at the intersection of East Bay Drive and Starkey Road after receiving a report of a deadly crash.

A 2016 Silver Mercedes Benz was reportedly driving East on East Bay Drive at high speeds when a 2014 Honda Civic was going South on Starkey Road. Witnesses say the driver of the Mercedes Benz, now identified as Andoni, ran a red light and crashed into the Honda Civic.

Both people in the Honda Civic, identified as Trejo-Mendoza and Monrroy, were declared dead on the scene. Andoni was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say impairment was not a reason for the crash.

The Largo Police Department's Traffic Homicide Investigators spent a week investigating with eyewitnesses, video surveillance footages and follow-ups on statements previously given to the agency.

After working in conjunction with the State Attorney's Office to get multiple search warrants, they were able to confirm Andoni was traveling 92 mph while running the red light. The area where the crash happened is a 45 mph zone.

Authorities say an investigation is still ongoing.
