Doctor arrested in connection to hit-and-run that killed man in a wheelchair

Dr. Gwyn N. Crump was arrested a month after the crash.

TAMPA, Fla. — A Hillsborough County doctor was arrested Wednesday in connection to a hit-and-run crash that killed a man in a wheelchair.

The crash happened just after 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 on East 124th Avenue in Tampa.

Deputies say 62-year-old Dr. Gwyn N. Crump hit a man in a wheelchair and drove off. The man, later identified as 53-year-old Richard Taylor, was transported to AdventHealth Fletcher where he died from his injuries.

"There were several witnesses to the hit-and-run who gave a description of the vehicle," the sheriff's office wrote.

Using that witness description along with crime center cameras, investigators were able to identify the car's tag. Deputies went to Crump's home where he reportedly admitted to driving the car the night of the crash.

Crump was arrested on Nov. 13 and charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

"I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family of the victim during this incredibly difficult time," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "While nothing can undo this heartbreaking loss, we hope that this arrest brings some measure of closure to their loved ones."

According to his medical license, Crump has been practicing occupational medicine in Florida since 1999.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
