BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — A man is behind bars after authorities say he killed a person Tuesday afternoon in Brooksville.

R.W. Resca Jr., 53, was charged with second-degree murder.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., deputies arrived at a business on Cortez Boulevard after receiving a call about a suspicious person, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Authorities said the caller told them they saw what appeared to be a dead person near the back of a dead-end road and they smelled a strong, foul odor.

The sheriff's office and crews with Hernando County Fire Rescue went to investigate the area and confirmed the suspicious person was dead and "in the early stages of decomposition."

The person reportedly appeared to have been killed.

Once authorities confirmed the identity of the body, they then determined Resca was a person of interest. He was found and taken in for questioning, deputies say.

The sheriff's office says within 10 hours of when they received the call about the body found, Resca confessed to killing the person and throwing the body near the dead-end road.

"Investigation revealed this was an isolated incident, domestic in nature, and that there is/was no threat to the community," the sheriff's office wrote in the news release.
