A Jacksonville man has been charged with first-degree murder after deputies say he sold someone a fatal dose of fentanyl disguised as heroin.
Investigators tell First Coast News that 26-year-old Oscar Novo sold the drug to 27-year-old Parker Clarkson in February 2018. Clarkson was later found dead at his home with a syringe and two plastic bags next to his body.
An autopsy confirmed he died of fentanyl toxicity.
According to WJXT, Novo's arrest on Friday marked the first time the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has used a new state law to charge an accused drug dealer in connection with a customer's death. His neighbor told the television station he was glad to see Novo charged.
"Our kids are dying every day for this stuff, and they just need to step up and do what they have to do and charge them," neighbor Bill Kranjac told WJXT.
Novo was arrested in St. Augustine. He is not eligible for bond.
In March, Corey Smith Jr. was convicted of selling the lethal dose of fentanyl that killed 46-year-old Bradley Dykes. In May, however, Smith was granted a new trial because of trial errors.
