TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police have arrested a teen they say is connected to a shooting in Ybor City that left two people dead and 16 others hurt.
The 14-year-old was taken into custody Thursday and is now facing felony charges including minor in possession of a firearm while wearing a mask and carrying a concealed firearm.
On Oct. 29, two officers were alerted of a "disturbance" at the intersection of 16th Street and 7th Avenue. Police saw someone, later identified as the teen, with a gun before he left the area.
Detectives were able to develop leads that led them to the teen in Palm Beach. Through working with the Palm Beach Fugitive Apprehension Unit, they were able to arrest him.
"There is no reasonable explanation for a 14-year-old to be in possession of a firearm," Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. "I am incredibly proud of the hard work our officers and detectives continue to dedicate to this investigation, which has led to another significant arrest in the case.
"We appreciate all the tips provided by our community to aid this investigation and we will continue to work closely with the State Attorney's Office to ensure that all those involved are arrested and held accountable for their actions. Our job is not finished."
The 14-year-old was taken to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office and is being held there until he's transported back to Tampa.
Police have now made two arrests in connection to the deadly Ybor City shooting.
Tyrell Philips, 22, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder with a firearm just hours after the shooting that left a 14-year-old and 20-year-old dead.
During the night of the shooting, as detectives were arriving at the scene, they were notified that Phillips had voluntarily turned himself in. Phillips had a Glock 29 10mm semi-automatic firearm in his waistband with 11 rounds in it, according to the criminal affidavit.
After he was detained, Phillips reportedly told detectives he was with a group of friends when she saw a woman he recognized as someone he had gone to middle school with. As he was waving at the woman, Phillips said he was approached by a group of six people in an "aggressive manner."
Phillips reported that one of the people in the group took a "fighting stance" toward him, another spit at him and a third person motioned toward his waistband as if he was reaching for a gun, the affidavit said. He added that he couldn't hear what was being said because it was so loud.
