BRIGHTON, Colorado (KUSA) - A Brighton police officer was seen comforting a child at the scene of a fatal rollover crash Thursday.
One person was killed in the single-vehicle crash on Interstate 76 in Brighton. It happened around 9:30 a.m. just past E-470.
Police say the two adults and four kids in the SUV were not properly restrained. All of them were ejected in the crash. An adult man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An adult woman and a child were airlifted to the hospital. The three remaining children were taken by ambulance.
Jessica Matrious was behind the SUV when it crashed. She said the vehicle blew a tire as it traveled down the interstate and lost control.
"They took an extreme sharp right turn and just immediately started to roll," Matrious said.
She immediately pulled over and offered help.
"I pulled over, obviously, and started running to the field to see what I could do," she said.
She was one of the first people to call for help. She also shared pictures of the crash. One of her photos depicts a Brighton police officer holding a small child, apparently in an attempt to distract the child from the grim scene in the background.
"It's so horrible to see something like that happen, especially because it could have been prevented," Matrious said. "If the father was wearing a seatbelt, then he'd still be here."
Westbound traffic was impacted during the investigation.
