WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A 28-year-old Winter Haven man won big when he bought a lottery scratch-off ticket from a Polk County store.
The Florida Lottery says James Fuchs claimed a $5 million top prize from its "200X THE CASH" scratch-off game. Fuchs chose to take his winnings in a lump sum of $4.45 million and essentially became a multi-millionaire overnight.
The winning ticket was purchased at Discount Beverage on U.S. Highway 17-92 North in Davenport. The Florida Lottery says the retailer will be getting a $10,000 bonus commission of its own for selling the winning ticket.
Fuchs scratch-off game only cost $20 and launched in September 2020. The lottery says the game includes 10 top prizes of $5 million and carries an overall odds of winning of 1-in-2.96.
According to a press release, scratch-off games account for 75 percent of ticket sales and generated more than $1 billion for the lottery's Educational Enhancement Trust Fund for 2019-20.
