Hernando County, Florida -- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is warning Citibank customers of a scam occurring both over the phone and via the mail telling them their account is past due.
Investigators say some customers have received a pre-recorded message from "Citibank" asking them to verify the card number, along with other personal information.
Other customers have also received letters in the mail from scammers. The letters appear to be legitimate mail from Citibank including the company logo, the last five digits of the victim's credit card number, as well as the victim's full name and address.
The letter indicates that the customer's account is past due and "together we will find a solution." A telephone number is provided for the account holder (victim) to call. Detectives have confirmed that the telephone number does not belong to Citibank.
This is a SCAM. Investigators say not to call the telephone number provided on the letter and do not provide your account number and/or your personal information if you receive the pre-recorded message. If you have questions about your account, please call the number on the back of your credit card or the customer service number provided on your regular billing statement.
