ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Parents of young children in Florida will soon save some money when it comes to buying some of the essentials — namely diapers. Additionally, people who need to use incontinence products will also see some monetary relief.
In a sweeping tax relief bill signed into law in May by Gov. Ron DeSantis, diapers and incontinence products will now permanently be exempt from sales tax. The law, which received more than $35.1 million in funding from Florida's budget, takes effect on July 1.
Under the law, "diapers, incontinence undergarments, incontinence pads, and incontinence liners" are exempt from the sales and use tax.
The law also exempts certain, specific baby and toddler products from being taxed, including the following:
- Baby cribs, including baby playpens and baby play yards
- Baby strollers
- Baby safety gates
- Baby monitors
- Child safety cabinet locks and latches and electrical socket covers
- Bicycle child carrier seats and "trailers designed for carrying young children, including any adaptors and accessories for these seats and trailers"
- Baby exercisers, jumpers, bouncer seats, and swings
- Breast pumps, bottle sterilizers, baby bottles and nipples, pacifiers, and teething rings
- Baby wipes
- Changing tables and changing pads
- Children's diapers — single-use diapers, reusable diapers and reusable diaper inserts
- Baby and toddler clothing, apparel and shoes
- Specifically for children ages 5 and under
- Baby and toddler clothing, size 5T and smaller
- Baby and toddler shoes, size 13T and smaller
Last year, Florida lawmakers made single-use diapers, reusable diapers and reusable diaper inserts for children tax-exempt for an entire year from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023
