Christmas tree shortage? Don't wait until it's too late

The American Christmas Tree Association is recommending consumers "find their tree early this year to avoid shortage impacts."

If you haven't already bought your Christmas tree to put up this holiday season, it might be a good time to start looking.

We haven't even carved the Thanksgiving turkey, but supply chain shortages, shipping delays and the year's extreme weather activity could have impacts on this year's Christmas tree numbers.

The American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA) is recommending consumers "find their tree early this year to avoid shortage impacts."

Whether you plan to pick out a real tree or buy a fake one, the Christmas tree industry could see a shortage for both.

"Unprecedented weather events in the Pacific Northwest, including fires, drought, and heat waves, have impacted live Christmas tree crop yields," ACTA said in a news release.

Not only are real trees showing lower numbers than in recent years, but artificial trees are also facing obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the supply chain backup. Based on the increased demand for goods and transportation, fewer artificial trees are available at a higher price.

ACTA Executive Director Jami Warner said the only way to ensure that you'll have the perfect tree for your family this year is to act fast.

"If I can give one piece of advice to consumers right now, it is to find and buy your Christmas tree early," Warner said.
