EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Wonder Hoodie is something its founder said she wishes didn't exist.
KGO-TV reports Vy Tran came up with the idea of a bulletproof hoodie after the shooting death of one of her neighbors. Tran was so worried about her family members, who would walk the same route as the neighbor, she searched for bulletproof gear to purchase.
"I looked online for something to buy them and I couldn't really find anything for women or children or at a price point I could afford," she told KGO-TV.
Tan, who has a background in material science, prepared materials herself and got them approved as body armor.
From a Kevlar XP-made hoodie to a jacket and other accessories, they're all available for sale online.
A small bulletproof hoodie starts at $595. There is a kid's version with a $450 asking price.
Tan told the TV station the demand is undeniable and not surprising.
