Multiple banks report outages after customers look for stimulus deposits

Online and mobile applications wouldn't work for many people, as well as phone lines.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — If you're looking for your stimulus check deposit, you may run into an error message.

Banks across the country are experiencing outages with many customers unable to log into their online or mobile banking.

With numerous banks reporting outages throughout the day Wednesday, your impending stimulus check may feel a bit like Schrodinger's cat.

Someone tweeted this morning at U.S. Bank saying, "Checking to see if stimulus has dropped into the account... so this is going to be how the day goes."

A couple of hours later, U.S. Bank began responding back to its customers, saying "Some customers are reporting intermittent issues when trying to log in to [our website] and our mobile app. We appreciate your patience as our teams investigate this matter. If you have an urgent account need, please contact us at 800.872.2657. ^hj"

Downdetector.com began showing reports of outages across from banks such as U.S. Bank, SunTrust, and Bank of America. According to the site, most of the outages began between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. EST Wednesday morning with reports dropping down around 1 p.m.

Fifth Third Bank also reported issues with both its online application and phone lines.

Just this morning, the IRS released an online stimulus check tracker. The website allows taxpayers to check on the status of their payment, confirm how they want to be paid (direct deposit or check) and to enter their bank account information for direct deposit purposes.

For those who do not file taxes for various reasons, there is also a non-filers web portal to provide information to receive their payment.

The government began issuing the one-time payments this week. Most adults who earned up to $75,000 will see a $1,200 payout, while married couples who made up to $150,000 can expect to get $2,400. Parents will get payments of $500 per child.

The checks will be directly deposited into bank accounts or mailed to households, depending on how you’ve filed your tax returns in the past.
