KERRVILLE, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week's Forgotten Friend is Monty, an almost 11-year-old Retriever mix who was brought to the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville six years ago, in October of 2018 after being surrendered to animal control. Yes, you read that correctly. Monty has been at the shelter for over six years now, waiting for someone to choose him to bring to love. He will celebrating his 11th birthday in January.
Staff say they don't really know much about Monty's past but they believe it was incredibly hard because now he needs a home with no other pets or small kids.
That's one of the main reasons Monty has been at the shelter so long. It's because he's what rescue organizations call a "unicorn." What this means is that he must be the only pet in your home. He doesn't get along with other dogs or even cats.
"Monty acts big and scary, but he is a huge sweetheart and loves to be cuddled," said shelter staff. "He still runs around and acts like he’s a little puppy."
Monty would do best with a semi-active family that would spend the time taking him for daily walks, or play with him in the yard, but then also take the time to cuddle up with him at night. A family with teenagers would be ideal for him.
"He loves treats, and will even sit and wait patiently and then gently take them from your hand," said shelter staff. "He loves all kinds of attention and especially loves belly rubs."
One thing that Monty does NOT like is thunderstorms. But he has a thunder coat that helps him remain calm and not be so scared.
"Monty also loves wearing sweaters and tutus and sitting in your lap like he only weighs ten pounds," said shelter staff.
He’s healthy, neutered, current on all of his vaccinations and just waiting for you to bring him home and love him.
"Monty does have a few fatty tumors on a few spots but they are absolutely nothing to worry about," said shelter staff.
Staff are hopeful that Monty won't have to spend yet another Christmas in the shelter.
"Monty has only lived two years of his almost 11 years outside of a kennel," said shelter staff. "He was originally surrendered when he was only eight weeks old and then adopted out at two years old. Sadly, he ended up back at a shelter at four years old when he was surrendered."

"Monty is beyond sweet," said shelter staff. "He’s a true lover and wants his forever home to live out his golden years."
He truly deserves the best and we know his special person is out there, someone who is searching for their new best friend.
If you are interested in adopting Monty and giving him a home for the holidays, you can visit the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville at 2900 Junction Highway. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until Noon and again from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The adoption fee for Monty is $85.
Applications can also be emailed to them at hsk@hctc.net. The shelter's phone number is (830) 367-7722.
For whoever adopts Monty, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
The shelter says they can always use volunteers at their resale shop, which helps to support the shelter. The resale shop is staffed entirely by volunteers. You can support them by donating gently used items, or by stopping by and purchasing stuff. The shop is affectionately known as the "pick of the litter resale shop." The shop is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and on major holidays. Call them at (830) 367-7755.
Monetary donations are always welcome, too. Send them to their post office box at P.O. Box 294810 Kerrville, Texas 78029.
They always need things to help with the care of the animals. Check out their current wish list below.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives... the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
