WASHINGTON — On a stormy day near the Kenilworth Rec Center on Jay Street NE earlier this month, a heartbreaking sight greeted someone walking by — a dog, tied to a post, and left all alone in the rain.
That sweet dog, now known as Ham Solo, had no one by his side, no shelter from the weather, and no idea what would happen next. But thanks to a compassionate individual who shared his story on Reddit, Ham Solo’s rescue was set in motion.
His name, “Ham Solo,” is a playful twist on the beloved Star Wars character Han Solo. But unlike the galactic adventurer, this Ham Solo’s journey is one of survival and hope. Abandoned and left in the rain, he has shown incredible resilience and a heart full of love, waiting for someone to give him the home he deserves.
While waiting for a new owner at the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe location, Ham Solo captured the hearts of everyone he met. When he first arrived at the shelter, a staff member remarked, "What a ham!" Another quickly chimed in, "And he's all by himself!" and thus, his charming name was born. Ham Solo truly lives up to the name, with his sweet, playful nature and a personality that can light up any room.
Despite being left out in the rain, Ham Solo seems to have taken everything in stride. While many dogs might feel anxious or stressed in the shelter, Ham Solo remains calm and content, often lounging in his cozy den as the world bustles around him, according to shelter workers. He's an easygoing companion who’s always happy to head out for a walk with his shelter friends, trotting along with a wagging tail and a grateful heart.
Because Ham Solo was found as a stray, not much is known about his past, but the vets at the shelter noted he has sensitive ears and skin. This may mean he may need special care, such as medication, baths, or special food.
Earlier this week, users on Washington D.C.'s subreddit noticed the link to Ham Solo's pet profile was no longer active. On Oct. 12, a spokes woman for the Humane Rescue Alliance confirmed to WUSA9 that Ham Solo had been adopted.
While Ham Solo now has a new home, many dogs remain who still don't. You can see info about the animals still available for adoption at the Humane Rescue Alliance.
