Tampa police officers awarded for saving man suffering from stroke

Tampa police officers came across an elderly man having a stroke when they were delivering food as a part of the department's partnership with Meals on Wheels.

TAMPA, Florida — A Tampa man is alive thanks to two police officers who were in the right place at the right time.

Officer Julius Cannon and Officer Adam Harris jumped into action on April 26 to save a man suffering from a stroke.

Every Wednesday, the officers deliver meals to those in need as a part of the Tampa Police Department's partnership with Meals on Wheels. Normally, the officers knock on a recipient's door, and someone answers.

A few months back, Cannon and Harris noticed something was off when they heard noises coming from inside one man's house. When that man finally answered the door, the officers noticed he was having a stroke.

Both officers are trained to render aid to those experiencing medical emergencies. The officers did that as they called for an ambulance.

The man received medical treatment for a stroke. Both officers are grateful he is OK.

"No one really checks on him a lot, so I don’t know if he would have been able to get aid without us being there," Cannon stated.

For their quick thinking and perfect timing, both officers received the Tampa Police Department’s Life Saving Award.

"It's not about the award, it’s about helping the community," Harris said.

This man lives alone so if they hadn’t been there, he could have died. Thankfully, the man made a full recovery.

"Grateful to the department for recognizing the situation. Ready to get back out there and do what we do," Cannon added.

The man has asked that his name not be released.
