ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The CrossFit community comes together every Memorial Day to honor Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a United States Navy Seal who was killed in action on June 28, 2005.
The workout they do to honor this American hero is called "Murph". It starts with a 1-mile run, followed by 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 air squats and wraps up with another 1-mile run. Each exercise is done with a weighed vest.
"It’s actually a workout that he created,” said Tony Vouis, the owner of Burg CrossFit. “It’s a long workout but we have million different ways to scale it and level it.”
For the past three years, Burg CrossFit has hosted a “Hero Challenge Workout.” CrossFitters are invited to do the Murph while raising money for the Brian Bill Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports active-duty and veteran Special Operation warriors.
The Hero Challenge Workout will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday. Workout heats start at 8:30 and 10 a.m. The kids Division starts at 10:30 a.m.
Burg CrossFit is located at 1900 13th Avenue N. St. Petersburg, FL 33713.
