TAMPA, Fla. — A Dollar General location in Tampa just got a refresh and with that remodel comes new products — specifically, fresh produce.

The store, located at 7850 N 56th St. in Tampa, was recently remodeled. In light of the store being redone, the company says it added the option for shoppers to get fresh produce items in order to better serve the community. It says while Dollar General is typically a convenience store and not a grocery store, adding the produce helps people have access to the "essentials."

“At Dollar General, we strive to be a positive business partner and good community neighbor in Tampa,” Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development, said in a statement. “Although we are not a grocery store, we believe the addition of produce in our Tampa store highlights our commitment to deliver a pleasant shopping experience that includes affordable prices on quality products in a convenient location.”

According to a news release, the Tampa Dollar General location will offer the "top 20 items" that are typically sold in traditional grocery stores. This includes the following fresh fruits and vegetables:

  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Salad Mixes

Still available at the Dollar General location include its usual frozen and refrigerated food, as well as the typical categories, brands and products the company has.

Currently, Dollar General says more than 4,400 stores across the country already offer fresh fruits and vegetables. The company says it has plans to expand that service to more than 10,000 stores "in the coming years." A "meaningful" number of those store locations will be in current U.S. Department of Agriculture-defined food deserts
