Celebrating Shark Awareness Day at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

July 14, "Shark Awareness Day," is an opportunity to educate on the importance of sharks to our ecosystems.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — On July 14, around the world, people celebrate what is often feared. It is Shark Awareness Day.

Shark Awareness Day is a time to shine a spotlight on the magnificent creatures of the ocean, as well as an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of sharks in our ecosystems, dispel common myths and promote conservation efforts.

Emma Jones, senior aquatic biologist at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, said sharks play an important role in marine life here in Tampa Bay.

"In Tampa Bay waters, we have species of sharks like lemon sharks. There are some nurse sharks and blacktip sharks. And they're all very important," Jones said. "So the presence of sharks means that our ecosystems are healthy. So if you are lucky enough to see a shark out in our natural waters, that means things are going well."

Sharks play an important role as apex predators by keeping everything else in line in the food chain, she said.

"A lot of people are afraid of sharks and very nervous if they would see one out in the natural environment. But they are very gentle creatures. They're just going about their business. So as long as we're viewing them from afar and respecting their space, because ultimately when we're swimming in the waters, we're in their home. So as long as we're polite guests, we shouldn't have any issues," Jones said.

Sunday also marks the final day of Shark Week at the aquarium.
