New leopard at Phoenix Zoo is one of less than 100 left on Earth

The 3-year-old leopard named Jasper is one of less than 100 Amur leopards left on on Earth.

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo is introducing the public to its newest addition-- a leopard named Jasper.

Jasper is a 3-year-old Amur leopard and is one of less than 100 left on Earth, according to the zoo. Less than 50 are suspected to still live in the wild.

Jasper just made the trip from Greenville Zoo in South Carolina and is getting used to his new surroundings. His night house has been made accessible to him throughout the day so don't be surprised if he is hiding during a visit in the near future.

The illusive Amur leopard has found its way to the Phoenix Zoo! Jasper has come to us from the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina and is one of less than 100 estimated Amur leopards left on our planet. He is cautious as he is getting used to his surroundings and will have access to his night house during the day, so please don't be too disappointed if you miss him! We are now just a couple weeks away from the grand opening of Predator Passage and can't wait to see you there!

The zoo is also getting closer to opening its new exhibit, Predator Passage, which Jasper will be a part of. The exhibit opens on Nov. 20 and will feature the Amur leopard, African lions, fennec foxes, meerkats, red river hogs, spotted hyenas and Ruppel’s griffon vultures.
