KEY COLONY BEACH, Fla. — A special guest has chomped its jaws all the way down to the Sunshine State. According to Ocearch, Simon the great white shark was seen swimming along the Florida Keys on Saturday, Jan. 27.
The website has followed Simon's journey going back to Dec. 5, 2022. He is named after St. Simons Island, an area in Georgia near where he was discovered.
Since then, Simon has made his way all along the east coast; going as far as just south of Quebec, Canada. His journey has now taken him off the coast of Key Colony Beach.
Still just a juvenile, he weighs in at 434 pounds and is 9 feet, 6 inches long. According to Oceana, adult great white sharks grow to a maximum size of approximately 20 feet in length and weigh up to 6,600 pounds.
The bigger Simon gets, the more variety he has for prey. According to the website, smaller great whites like Simon prey on fish, rays and crustaceans. When they are larger, they eat seals, sea lions, dolphins and even other sharks.
Great white sharks are one of more than 450 shark species and are the largest of all predatory sharks in the ocean, the website states. The species from the East Coast tend to travel southward into warmer water during the cooler months, sometimes making Florida their home during the winter.
