MIAMI — Zoo Miami is mourning the death of an African elephant who died after a confrontation with another elephant.
Zoo officials said Cita, who was 50, died Friday after she was knocked down by Peggy, another African elephant.
The zoo said elephants are social animals and sometimes clash to determine dominance.
Cita may have gotten a blood clot that led to her death, officials said. They said the elephant also suffered from other age-related issues such as advanced arthritis.
The official cause of death won't be known until test results come back in several weeks.
Cita arrived at the zoo in April 2016. She was previously at the Virginia Zoo.
According to National Geographic, African elephants live up to 70 years in the wild.
