2 dogs fall through ice at Colorado park

Aurora Fire Rescue said both dogs got out of the water on their own, but then one went missing.

AURORA, Colo. — Two small dogs had a close call Wednesday morning when they fell through the ice at an Aurora park.

Aurora Fire Rescue said a passerby spotted the dogs plunging through the ice about 10 to 15 feet from shore of a pond at Utah Park, near South Peoria Street and East Jewell Avenue, and called 911.

Crews responded, but before firefighters could reach the dogs, both had pulled themselves out of the water.

One of the dogs ran off before rescuers could check its condition. The second dog was treated in an ambulance and was later turned over to Animal Control to help find its owner.

Aurora Fire Rescue offered some tips to keep people and pets safe around ice:

  • Keep pets on a leash at all times.
  • If a person or pet falls through the ice, call 911 for help, stay on the shore and throw a floatation device or rope. Attempting a rescue yourself could cause you to fall through the ice.
  • If you fall through ice, try to stay calm. Act slowly to conserve heat. Don't try to swim, which will cause your body to lose heat much faster. Try to get your arms onto the ice. Kick your feel as hard as you can to help lift you onto the ice. If you can't get out by yourself, try to keep your upper body above the water to conserve body heat and yell to alert others that you need help.
