Pasco County Animal Services suspends certain operations due to dog-related virus

The suspended services include dog adoptions, intakes, surgeries and rescue transfers.

LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — A reported virus spreading through a Pasco County Animal Services shelter has caused the company to suspend several dog-related operations for at least the next four weeks.

The organization says a canine influenza-causing respiratory disease has affected some animals in their Land O' Lakes shelter located off Dogpatch Lane.

“The health and safety of the animals in our care, as well as people and pets in our community, is and will always be our top priority,” said PCAS Director Mike Shumate in a statement. “We realize this suspension of services is an inconvenience for our customers, and we appreciate your understanding.”

The suspended services include dog adoptions, intakes, surgeries and rescue transfers.

While the suspensions are underway, PCAS says it is making sure its dogs are safe with ongoing testing, supportive care and contact with recent adopters and rescues.

According to the shelter, canine influenza is difficult to control in kennels, stating that it is likely spreading in their building.

PCAS clarifies that cat-related operations are not affected. This includes adoptions, intakes, surgeries or rescue transfers. Any pet licensing and owner-requested euthanasia needs are also open.

They are asking anyone with pets showing symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose and coughing, to contact their veterinarian immediately.

Normal operations will resume as normal when veterinarians determine the environment is safe for pets, PCAS says.
