PALM CITY, Fla. — A dog was stranded on a spillway overlooking a high drop into an alligator-filled canal in Palm City, until residents and Animal Services officers came to its rescue.
Though it is unclear how the dog ended up on the 12-foot drop around the rim canal with no way to safely escape, two residents tried and failed to rescue the dog, according to local reports. Concerned for the dog's safety, and claiming they could see alligators swimming in the canal below, the residents called 911 for help.
Officials with the Martin County Sheriff's Office said an officer came to the scene along with the supervisor of the sheriff's office's Animal Services and an officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
"It took some time and maneuvering, but they didn’t give up and those efforts paid off," MCSO said in a written statement.
The officials rescued the dog and took it to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
