Motorists have found at least five dead cats along the Howard Frankland Bridge in the last two weeks, but no one is sure how they got there, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Most of the cats have been found on the left side of the northbound lanes before the hump.

"It definitely seems too far for them to be getting there on their own," Chris Slattery told the Times of the spot, about 3 miles from land. "And it's always on the left side of the road … The right side has enough room for a car to pull over, but they're always on the left."

He said he has seen three dead cats on his commute. They're always on his way to Tampa, always on the left side of the bridge and always dead.

Sgt. Steve Gaskins, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol, said the agency got a report of a cat on a shoulder of the highway but the trooper did not find any upon his arrival.
