TAMPA, Fla. โ Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is mourning the loss of one of its beloved animals, Simon the lion.
The theme park posted Thursday on Facebook about Simon's death. He was 17 years old and just shy of turning 18.
Late last week, officials said Simon's health began to decline and despite efforts to treat him, animal care and veterinary teams made the decision to euthanize him.
He arrived at Busch Gardens as a cub in 2007.
"For 17 wonderful years, Simon touched hearts and inspired his care team and park guests alike. Simon was a playful soul both as a cub and into adulthood โ he loved breaking open coconuts and pumpkins and taking โbathsโ in beds of spices and seasonings," the park said in its post.
People on Busch Gardens' Facebook page have been sharing their own pictures and memories of Simon. Around Christmastime, Nicole Mae wrote, Simon appeared to approach her just beyond the glass.
"It was almost as if he wanted me to touch him with the way he kept coming close to where I was at. He'll be missed," Mae wrote.
Diana Kelley Behrman wrote, "Aww very sad loss!! He was truly magnificent and we enjoyed seeing him on each visit, really loved to hear him roar ๐ I know he will be missed by Rose, his caretakers and all his fans!!"
Rose is Busch Gardens' surviving lion, and the park says its care team remains focused on caring for her.
"We thank you for your support during this difficult time," Busch Gardens said.
