Cowboys help capture escaped buffalo in Leander

A pair of buffalo went on the run Thursday but were safely returned to their home.

LEANDER, Texas β€” It's not everyday you see buffalo on the loose. But on Thursday, two buffalo went on the run in Leander.

The Leander Animal Services responded to the unique call when two buffalo – named Moonshine and Sundance – escaped from their enclosure. An error with a gate allowed the animals to leave their pen, and they were seen running around the nearby area.

"They hiked through the gate, into some back yards, through some thick brush, around trees, and went over and through some rough terrain," the Leander Police Department (LPD) said in a Facebook post Friday. "They stopped for a snack here and there and kept hydrated."

Two ATV drivers attempted to wrangle them in but were unable to do so.

Then, two cowboys on horseback were hired for the job. With the help of their dogs, they were able to send Moonshine and Sundance back home.

In addition to the cowboys, the animals' return was made possible with the help of Leander Animal Services, the Williamson County Deputies/Livestock team and the Travis County Livestock team.

While buffalo once roamed freely across Texas, they are now typically only found on ranches or in captivity. One Facebook commenter wrote, "Leander. Not too urban to have buffalo roam."

LPD thanked all who were involved in helping Moonshine and Sundance get home safely.

***Why did the buffalo get an award? Because she was outstanding in her field! πŸ˜‚*** Ok, now that we got that over...
