Lt. Col. Sam Sachs is asking for birthday cards to help him celebrate his 105th birthday.

LAKEWOOD, Calif. — Lieutenant Colonel Sam Sachs was going to celebrate his long, accomplished life with a 105th birthday party, but it was canceled because of COVID-19.

Instead, Lt. Col. Sachs put out a video message asking for everyone, including President Donald Trump, to send him a birthday card.

Lt. Col. Sachs will celebrate his 105th birthday on April 26. He served in World War II as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and 325th Glider Infantry Regiment. He was there the day the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy.

When he retired from the service, he became a school teacher in Southern California.

Lt. Col. Sachs lives in Lakewood, California. Mayor Todd Rogers asked the community to send cards for the veteran during his weekly address. To protect against the coronavirus, Mayor Rogers says any cards the city receives to forward on to Lt. Col. Sachs will be set aside for several days and opened with gloves.

Mayor Rogers talks about face masks, about Lakewood resident and WWll veteran Sam Sachs, who will be celebrating his 105th birthday in a couple of weeks, and shares some reminders on social distancing this holiday weekend.
