ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A set of construction workers are being hailed as heroes after going above and beyond the call of duty after discovering a burning building near their job site.
Mason Fierro and others working on a roof saw flames shooting off a building next door and ran over to try to help, CNN reports.
"We heard the father scream," Fierro told CNN. "like a scream we have never heard before. When we heard that, we ran over as soon as possible."
He said he saw a father dangling his baby from a window and instantly knew what to do. He yelled at the dad to drop her and he would catch her.
After hesitation on the father's part, he dropped the baby, and Fierro caught her.
"There was no doubt in mind that I would catch her," he told CNN.
Fierro then coaxed the father to drop his little boy, and he caught him as well.
"Seeing him catch that baby girl and that baby boy, it touched me," one of the workers told KTRK. "He stepped up and really became the hero of the day."
The construction workers then helped the parents down the ladder.
The workers quickly went door to door, knocking and making sure everyone was able to safely get out of the building.
Albuquerque Fire Rescue told CNN the two children were taken to the hospital by family members, and one person was taken by ambulance for smoke inhalation. All are reportedly in stable condition.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The apartment complex is a "total loss."
