(USA TODAY) -- Michelle MacLaren was excited and happy to be directing Wonder Woman, when the news of her landing the job was announced in November.
She would be the second female filmmaker to helm a comic-book superhero story. Lexi Alexander directed 2008 film Punisher: War Zone.
MacLaren, a two-time Emmy winner, is well known for her TV work, having directed episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and The X-Files. Wonder Woman would have been MacLaren's film directorial debut.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter and CNN say MacLaren has exited Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, citing creative differences.
"Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together," the studio said in a statement.
THR says that the specific differences aren't known, but the split is reminiscent of 2011 when Marvel and director Patty Jenkins also parted ways after she had been tapped to direct Thor 2. She and Marvel hit an impasse and Alan Taylor wound up directing the film.
The movie is slated to be released in June 2017.
