Free vaccines ending for Hamburger Mary's guests possibly exposed to hepatitis A

Officials say people who ate or drank at the Ybor City restaurant between Oct. 4-20 should be vaccinated to keep from getting sick.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Time is running out for people who went to a Ybor City restaurant where an employee who tested positive for hepatitis A to be vaccinated for free.

The vaccine is available at the Department of Health Hillsborough Sulphur Springs location, which is at 8605 Mitchell Ave. The clinic is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Health officials last Thursday said a worker at Hamburger Mary's tested positive for hepatitis A. It said people who ate or drank between Oct. 4-20 should be vaccinated to keep from getting sick.

However, the vaccine must be administered within two weeks of exposure. That time is expiring soon and expired for some people already.

As of Tuesday, 574 people received the vaccine after Thursday's announcement. Additionally, the 813-307-8004 hotline received nearly 400 calls.

Officials said there have been no Hepatitis A cases linked to the Hamburger Mary's incident.

Those who are not affected by the Hamburger Mary's incident must pay $59 for the hepatitis A vaccine unless they are high-risk and qualify for a free vaccine.
