Tampa - Tampa television and radio personality Chris Thomas has died from cancer. He was 55. Thomas, born Christian Thomas Olrick, came to Tampa in 1988 as a sportscaster on WFLA. He was known for his wit and controversial comments. He most recently hosted a sports talk show on radio station WDAE. He died Wednesday. Thomas developed his signature closing while working at Tampa radio station WFLA when he ended his talk show with a tape of Kate Smith singing “God Bless America” as a gag. When he stopped after a week or two of playing the song, listeners demanded he continue. Thomas’ favorite sport was horse racing and said his greatest career accomplishment was winning an Eclipse Award for a story on Triple Crown winner Secretariat in 1990. Thomas also owned race horses. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Chris's family as he surely will be missed.
