ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — If you're looking for Disney's next big thing, go west: Plans are in the works to create a Marvel-themed land, featuring superheroes from the comics.
The Los Angeles Times reports the Disneyland Resort in California, which opened "Star Wars: Galaxy Edge" last month, recently earned approval for several building permits for a planned Marvel land. They include a 2,071-square-foot merchandise outlet, a microbrewery, character meet-and-greet area and more.
Disney fans have been following the construction through searches of permits at the city of Anaheim's website, according to the paper.
When Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment in 2009, it agreed to respect licensing agreements made with other movie studios, the Times said. That includes its theme park rival, Universal Studios.
One of the stipulations prohibit Disney from using the word "Marvel" in the title of any theme park land, and some characters cannot be used by Disney east of the Mississippi River -- i.e. at Walt Disney World.
The Times reports company officials are expected to detail more about their plans during the D23 Disney celebration in late August.
