Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Food Waste

(USA TODAY) Think twice next time you throw away that slightly bruised apple.

According to a segment from Sunday's Last Week Tonight, Americans throw away $165 billion worth of food every year, and John Oliver is outraged about it.

Even the host was surprised at the stats surrounding food waste in America; up to 40 percent of all food produced in the U.S. never gets eaten, even while nearly 50 million households across the country experience food insecurity.

"At this rate," Oliver joked, "in 40 years when you order pizza from Domino's, they'll just deliver it straight to the nearest dumpster. As they should, but that's not the point here."

Yikes! Even if you pay attention to how much food you trash, Oliver's eye-opening routine is still worth a watch. (Because you're probably not as responsible as you think you are.)
