It looks like the Golden Globes are going for nice over naughty, as Ricky Gervais is sitting next year out to make room for new host Jimmy Fallon.

The "Tonight" show host will take over MC duties for the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, it was announced Tuesday.

"This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television," NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said. "Jimmy's playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that's made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year."

Fallon takes over for Gervais, who hosted the event in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016 -- often drawing as much criticism for his biting humor as praise. Gervais' tenure was briefly interrupted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who co-hosted in 2013, 2014 and 2015 to positive reviews.

Prior to Gervais' first outing in 2010, the ceremony went without a host for more than a decade.

"Jimmy Fallon is an exceptionally talented and dynamic entertainer, and we couldn't be more excited that he'll be hosting the 2017 Golden Globes," said Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. "His charm, wit and incredible spontaneity will play exceedingly well both to everyone at the show as well as the millions watching at home from around the world."

Fallon takes over from last year's host, Ricky Gervais, whose biting style of humor brought groans as well as laughs

The Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on January 8, 2017.
