Actor Manu Bennett was arrested and charged with assault after he was accused of drunkenly punching a man at a party in a San Antonio hotel over the weekend, say San Antonio police.
The New Zealand-born actor, who was in town for the Alamo City Comic Con over the weekend, was at a party in a downtown Grand Hyatt hotel room Saturday night when he was asked to leave after allegedly drinking too much and "causing a scene," according to the police report.
As he was leaving, he encountered Craig Brown, 29, who also was at the party but happened to be standing near the door. According to the report, Bennett stopped and stared at Brown who, confused, asked "What?" Then Bennett allegedly punched him, knocking him to the ground and dislocating his nose before leaving.
Brown wanted to press charges. Later, when the cops tracked down Bennett's agent, who led them to Bennett's hotel room, Bennett claimed not to remember what happened, although he did say he was "defending himself," the report says.
He was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury. He was jailed and released Sunday afternoon.
Bennett, 45, is best known for playing Azog the Defiler in The Hobbit movie trilogy made in his native country. More recently, he has a Gallic gladiator in the Starz TV series, Sparticus, and as a supervillain in the CW series, Arrow.
So far, Bennett has not commented publicly or through a representative about the incident.
