TAMPA, Fla. — As they say, April showers bring May flowers. Well, Tampa Bay didn’t experience much rain last month so here’s a new phrase: May this month bring Tampa Bay residents many exciting weekend events.
People can walk, paddle and pirouette their way into a good time this weekend at Urban Kai’s Paddle Invasion, Tampa Theatre’s celebration of Star Wars Day and a ballet performance inspired by the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo at the Straz Center, among others.
What: For two days free of charge, surround yourself with a night full of sights and activities like a wiener dog derby, a water ski show, food vendors and, of course, Curtis Hixon’s windless waterfront.
When: 5 – 10 p.m. Friday, May 3
11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday, May 4
What: Those from the Tampa Bay paddle board shop Urban Kai will invade the Tampa Riverfest with their paddle boards, surf skis and canoes to race down the river in swift fashion. Don’t worry though, they will come in peace!
When: 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4
What: Immerse yourself in the world of Star Wars at the Tampa Theatre as showings of three films from the original trilogy will be available for all to experience.
When: 12:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday, May 4
What: The ballet company is set to immortalize the diaries and life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, one of the most well-known painters from the early 20th century.
When: Noon – 7 p.m. Saturday, May 4
Noon – 6 p.m. Sunday, May 5
What: It’s Tampa Bay’s celebration of the spirit of the Kentucky Derby, featuring live music, food, dancing, cigars and racing horses. Proceeds from the event are set to go toward the Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg.
