Cape Coral, Florida-- University of South Florida researchers have finally identified the source of a thumping noise that has confounded Cape Coral residents for decades. It's the mating call of a fish!Researchers say male black drum fish produce the sounds at such a low frequency that it travels through seawalls, the ground and into homes. They used recorders to capture the sounds underwater, on the ground and even from a house's window sill. Residents say the noises thump like a heartbeat or the bass from a passing car stereo.
