TAMPA, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol has identified the driver killed when his car plunged into the Tampa Bypass Canal.
FHP said Patrick Bilder, 43, of Tampa, was driving eastbound on Adamo Drive when he crossed the grass median and began going eastbound in the westbound lanes and collided with a concrete barrier wall.
Bilder was then redirected into the travel lanes and collided with a Dodge Ram.
FHP said Bilder's Toyota Camry went airborne, collided with a Mazda 323 and then continued airborne off the bridge and laned in the canal, fully submerged.
Bilder was pronounced dead at the scene.
The people in the other vehicles were not seriously injured, according to FHP.
A study from the University of Manitoba says people need to get out of sinking cars in the first 30 to 60 seconds of a crash. The study warns that people should not open the door because water will flood in and that will make the car sink faster.
