Pie for Pi Day? Fun facts on the mathematician's favorite day

While it's fun to eat pie on Pi Day, today is really all about numbers.

TAMPA, Fla. -- It’s Pi Day, so we went to Mike's Pies in Tampa to celebrate.

While it's fun to eat pie on Pi Day, today is really all about numbers. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Pi is an irrational number, meaning it can’t be written as a fraction, and it has an infinite number of digits that never repeat. No matter the size of the circle, pi never changes.

The first three digits of pi are 3.14, which is why Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, 3/14. The symbol for pi comes from the Greek alphabet “π.”

Pi is used by engineers, scientists, and mathematicians just to name a few.

In honor of the day, here are some fun pi facts:

In 2009, the United States Congress officially recognized March 14 as Pi Day.

The Guinness Record for most decimal places of Pi memorized is 70,000. The record was set by Rajveer Meena, of India, on March 21, 2015. It took him nearly 10 hours to recite the numbers.

Some of the earliest references to pi were found in Babylon and Egypt nearly 4,000 years ago.

Only 39 digits of pi are needed to accurately calculate the spherical volume of our entire universe.
