A Florida man has gone viral on Facebook after making a statement against the ownership of AR-15-style rifles and relinquishing his weapons to the Miami Police Department as part of their buy-back program.

Steve Hemmert, a self-proclaimed former U.S. Army Infantry officer, said he was well-trained in the use of these weapons, even stating he and his 14-year-old daughter built one of the guns together.

But after the Parkland shooting on Feb. 14, he says “enough is enough.”

“There is no valid need for any civilian to own an AR,” Hemmert said in a Facebook post that has garnered more than 97,000 Facebook reactions, 60,000 shares and numerous comments both in support and against his views.

“Any honest gun owner will admit that the only lawful reason to own an AR is because they are fun to shoot (and they ARE fun to shoot).”

Hemmert said he wants to be part of the solution, but there are many commenters who believe he’s a “sheep” who is giving away his rights.
